MSW Program

Program Overview

First accredited in 1929 The Ohio State University College of Social Work is the nation's oldest continuingly accredited public social work program. Inscribed over the entrance to our building are the values that guide our profession and shape the educational experience at The College of Social Work. Justice, Freedom, Democracy, Knowledge, Experience, Happiness.

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares students for entry into advanced social work practice. This 90-hour program consists of three principal parts: a foundation curriculum that provides the knowledge, values, and skills common to all social work practice, advanced concentration courses in either clinical or social administration practice, and an extensive field practicum experience.

The College of Social Work offers a number of curricular options:

Two Year Full Time
Students electing this option earn their MSW degree in six-quarters. The initial year emphasizes generalist practice and a strong foundation in the social work profession. First year students spend a portion of their winter and spring quarters completing a 320 hour field practicum in a community agency. Second year students select either a clinical or administrative concentration. The second year empasizes advanced practice and includes a 720 hour field practicum occuring over all three quarters.

Three or Four Year Part-Time
The MSW degree can also be earned on a part-time basis over either a three or four year period. In addition to enrolling at our Columbus campus, students have the option of taking the initital portion of this curriculum at one of three Ohio State regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield or Newark.

Full-Time & Part-Time Advanced Standing Alternative Plan (ASAP)
Students who have recently completed an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program, may be eligible to for this option. Admission criteria include an earned undergraduate degree in social work within the past five years, and a strong academic record. Full-time ASAP students obtain their MSW in four-quarters. Part-time ASAP students can complete the program over eight quarters.

Foundation Curriculum
The foundation curriculum provides students with a common base of values, skills, and knowledge. This foundation curriculum, built on a liberal arts perspective, includes course work in human behavior in the social environment, social welfare policies and programs, social work research, social work practice with individuals, groups, families, organizations and the community, a social work practice lab, social and cultural diversity and a field practicum. Completion of the foundation in the first two quarters precedes enrollment in advanced-level courses.

Advanced Curriculum
Students in both the clinical and social administration concentrations take four required practice courses specific to that concentration along with an advanced practicum   In addition, students are required to take an advanced policy course and select from among a number of elective courses.
